Tea Cup Etiquette – how to handle the handle

The first teacups to arrive on the London Docks in 1650 were from China; they were small clay bowls with saucers and could be purchased from tea dealers or porcelain merchants.

Handles on tea cups only became popular around 1750 and holding the handle in the correct fashion was essential. Do not cradle the handle with both hands or swirl the tea around the cup. Never slurp your tea or blow on it to cool it down.

Early tea equipage consisted of a creamer for the milk, a sugar bowl, a pitcher of hot water (for those who prefer weak tea) and a plate for lemon slices.

A lady would pride herself on her eclectic tea service, which might include expensive Chinese porcelain or silver, pewter or Dutch Delftware.
